Step Up as Your Company's Innovation Agent: Spotting the Tech Trends of 2023

Hello, tech-savvy ladies!

Let's face it - the tech industry can be a bit of a boy's club, but don't let that hold you back.

We, women, have a critical role in shaping the future of technology, bringing much-needed diversity and creativity to the table.

Some of you might still be using a Hotmail email account, and that's okay!

But let's be honest - the tech world moves faster than you can blink. Something new pops up when you think you've got the hang of the latest trend, leaving you feeling like a digital dinosaur.

As Peter Drucker once said: "Trying to predict the future is like driving down a country road at night with no lights while looking out the back window."

Don't worry, though. I've got you covered! With a little effort and some handy tips, you can stay up-to-date on emerging tech trends and future-proof your career.

So, let's get started!

1. Research

The first step is to do your research. Follow well-known futurists like Amy Webb, Peter Diamandis, and Bernard Marr, as well as other big players in the tech world like Deloitte or Andreessen Horowitz. They do all the hard work for you and publish excellent trend reports each year for free, giving you the scoop on the latest and greatest.

No crystal ball is needed!

I love that you can use Notion and its web clipper to collect your findings. Google Docs or Excel lists are also good options. Choose whatever works best for you.

2. Digest

After obtaining valuable reports, it is crucial to take the time to digest them. However, 100-page reports can be overwhelming. Therefore, it is important to schedule enough time to review them. To help with this, I recommend watching Amy Webb's one-hour presentation. She breaks down her findings in an easy-to-understand manner, and her presentation is also entertaining.

3. Tech Cards

Next, choose your top 5 technologies to dive deeper into and create "tech cards". This will help you understand the technology at a high level and break it down into bite-sized chunks. I like to use ChatGPT these days to help me come up with the answers.

It's pretty awesome and takes only minutes!

For the tech pros: If you're like me and love beautiful designs, create a Canva Tech Card template and upload all the tech trend cards in bulk.

4. Tech Trends Mind Map

To accelerate your learning, try making it more visual. One option is to create a mind map. I love making visuals like this and was recently inspired by a LinkedIn post from Andrew Barry.

I tried a new tool that combines ChatGPT and MindMeister, and I'm now obsessed with it! This tool is a game-changer and helps me learn and understand new technologies in minutes instead of hours.

Plus, it's pretty fun to use!

Here's how I applied Andrew's idea to my use case:

  • I used the prompt below and replaced {topic} with the technology trend I want to dive deeper into.
  • I copied the code output from ChatGPT.
  • I saved it as a plain text (.txt) file.
  • Imported it into MindMeister or a tool of my choice. (I tried Mirow but couldn't upload a list of data.)

And voila, here's what it looks like using "AI" as an example:
